WWWE Logo Navigation Bar

A navigation bar is a graphic or set of graphics which acts as control buttons to move among the pages of a Web site. Often an image map is used as a navigation bar so that one image can be used to handle all the possible options. A navigation bar can be anything from a simple image of buttons to complex animated VRML graphics.

When you create a navigation bar for a Web site, you should keep a few things in mind.

  1. Not everyone can view images, and of those who can, some of them cannot or will not load large images. Therefore you should always provide a text-based version of your navigation controls.
  2. Multiple images will dramatically increase the time required to display your page. Bored people waiting for big files will go elsewhere fast.
  3. Small graphics for each navigation control may provide greater speed, better control, and easier maintenance.
